1. What are pros and cons of a ban on Muslim veils in public spaces?

–Pros: The pros of a ban on Muslim veils are that since most of them do hide the face, such a  ban would be convenient for security purposes. Since veils hide the face it would be difficult to identify a person due to that so for safety it is understandable that they get banned in places like courts, airports, and government offices.
–Cons: The cons are that people may feel offended by such a ban and feel like their religion isn’t welcome. Also, since veils are banned in certain schools, students may feel like they’re being denied an education and that may cause them to not want to go to school.

2. Do you think that a ban on Muslim veils in public spaces will increase public safety? Why?

I don’t really think that a ban on Muslim veils would increase public safety because it’s not like only people that wear them are the ones who do bad things or try to cause any harm. I feel like there are many other things that should be done to increase public safety such as more police on duty and perhaps adding more surveillance cameras in places. Focusing on the ban of Muslim veils to increase public safety may also be seen as something offensive to many people, especially the Muslim community.

3. Do you think that a ban discourages women from pursuing education? Why?

I think that such a ban would discourage many women from pursuing an education because the veil is part of their culture and it means a lot to them. For many of them it isn’t right to go out without the veil so therefore if the veil is banned they will feel discouraged and have no choice but to not pursue an education.

4. Suppose that the Muslim population is increasing in your target country.

How do you think your target country would handle it?

Does the country more or less respect different cultures/religions?

Is the country more conservative? Why?

I feel that even if the Muslim population increased in Colombia they wouldn’t really make any changes to laws or policies because of the increase. I think that people in Colombia will respect their culture and customs because Colombian people are known to be friendly and respectful towards others. Colombia isn’t really conservative. People there do a lot of things freely and don’t really think of it as a negative thing as opposed to other countries that may be more strict with what people do.

History







    The culture of Colombia has been influenced by Spanish, African, Caribbean, American, European and Middle Eastern countries. Apart from them, the constant political changes, the globalization, and urbanization have also brought about a number of changes in the culture. The fashion industry in Colombia too has undergone major changes from the ancient times.
Today, most Colombians wear Western-style clothing. Urban professionals from the Andean interior tend toward conservative, dark-colored suits, while farmers and members of the lower classes prefer loose skirts or pants.
Modern dress in Colombia’s coastal regions is a little more free-wheeling, with loose-fitting styles and bright colors or prints that reflect the region’s Caribbean influences.

During national festivals like the
Carnaval de Barranquilla
however, Colombia’s traditional fashions take center stage.
La Pollera Colora
(“brightly colored skirt”) is probably Colombia’s most well-known national costume for women. It consists of a vividly colored skirt paired with a matching, round-necked blouse, which bares (or partially reveals) the shoulders. Ruffles and lace line the neck and knee lines, and designs range from horizontal bands of brightly contrasting colors to intricate floral or native prints. For parades and performances, men don similar outfits — matching pants ruffled at the ankle, vivid capes and elaborate headdresses.

The Sombrero Vueltiao roughly meaning ‘turned hat’  is an iconic symbol of Colombia, They originate from the Zenu indigenous people and have been traditionally worn by farm workers in the Caribbean region. They are now used by Cumbia dancers and Vallenato singers. The hats are sold all over Colombia as handicrafts and many Colombians like to wear them as a symbol of national pride.

The Ruana is a Colombian cultural icon. It is pretty much a four-cornered coat.
